Position Description
Job Title: Librarian
Faculty/Department: Learning Resources Center (LRC)
Reporting to: Manager, Learning Resources Center
Type of Employment: Full-Time 0
Purpose of Position: The Librarian will be responsible for developing, selecting and organizing LRC collections and providing excellent services to LRC users.
Role and Responsibilities:
• Implement provided Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) controls and follow instructions.
• Look after and keep the provided HSE equipment and facilities healthy and report any damage of equipment and facilities identified to the HSE team.
• Report any HSE incidents and missed behavioural observations.
• Providing reference services to the LRC users:
- Assisting users to use services and resources of the Learning Resource Centre (LRC).
- Instructing users to use OPAC system to locate the resources.
- Answering routine inquiries, and referring users in need of professional assistance to librarians.
- Providing research support to users.
• Dealing professionally with any Integrated Library Management System:
- Registering new users and issuing borrowers identification cards.
- Sending out notices and accepting fine payments for lost or overdue books.
- Operating the circulation system (issuing and returning books) and the reservation system (reserving books).
- Maintaining the system: entering details into the catalogue for new stock, deleting catalogue records for the withdrawn stock.
- Generating statistics reports of usage.
- Applying any new knowledge and skills.
• Developing LRC collections and books acquisitions:
- Progressing orders for new items.
- Liaise with the faculties through LRC Liaison Program.
- Dealing professionally with E-resources, managing E-resources and knowing the strategic of search and browsing.
- Informing the users about new acquisitions through current awareness services.
• Classifying and cataloging items:
- Classifying items according to congress classification system.
- cataloging items according to cataloging standards.
- Maintaining of LRC collections.
- Ensuring that the LRC stock is in good order: i.e., shelving and filing new and returned books and materials and maintaining resources in their correct order.
- Maintaining LRC materials in usable condition: cleaning, covering, replacing spine and date labels
• Promoting awareness of the services and resources:
- Providing information and digital literacy sessions to students, researchers, and staff.
- Producing posters and displays promoting LRC’s services and resources.
• Looking after the LRC environment: keeping notice boards and displays tidy and up to date.
• Taking action to deal with disruptive or problem patrons.
• Staying updated with current research, trends, and technologies in the field
• The employee is required to strictly adhere and comply with Sohar University policies, bylaws, and regulations that are related to their work.
• Any other assigned tasks that fall within the competence of the department/faculty.
Qualifications:
A degree in Library and Information Sciences with Experience of working in a library is preferred.
Knowledge & Skills:
General:
• Fully conversant with the Omani labour law.
• Moderated level in writing and speaking of Arabic and English languages (following the department/faculty).
• Ability to use computers and relevant computer applications for the job.
• Clear and effective communicator.
• Resourceful (know where to find information for problem-solving).
• Team player, leads and supports changes to improve business performance.
• Sound organizational and administrative ability
• Ability to manage students’ behavior

• Aware of the Health and Safety requirements of staff at work and environmental conservation programs.
• Good ICT, literacy and numeracy skills

• Good presentation skills to give talks to students and visitors
• Working knowledge of library methods and procedures.
• Ability to operate library machines properly.
• Keyboarding and filing ability.
• Ability to provide training to staff and students
• Ability to market about Library services.
Relevant Experience:
Experience of working in a library is preferred.
Note:
*All qualifications awarded from outside Oman should be equivalent by Ministry of Education.
